★ UNIQUE NAMBU TEKKI - Vintage Japanese paperweight - DRAGON BUNCHIN  ★

Japanese paperweights come in many shapes and of many materials, some are rather artistic and collector's items. Most are rather long to make sure the paper is kept securely in place.

Nambu ironware is rust-resistant, long-lasting, well-insulated, and provides a uniform circulation of heat.

Japanese craftsmen are experts in the making of cast ironware. And they still produce some of the most beautiful handmade ironware you have ever laid your eyes on.

Nambu ironware is a form of metalwork produced in the city of Morioka in Iwate prefecture. It is a traditional handicraft that was first created in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868).

The name “Nanbu” or “Nambu” has its origin from a feudal clan called Nanbu-Han. This clan ruled the northeastern part of Honshu for over 700 years. The Nambu clan established the cast iron industry in the region, and since the area had easy to access resources to make ironware, the industry quickly established.

The plan worked, and the ironware became a local specialty. And the ironware became treasured gifts among feudal lords and the ruling classes. The ironware was also very expensive, with very few being able to afford such a luxury item.

Many artisans still make their ironware using painstaking traditional methods such a hand made clay molds. This is one of the reasons why Nanbu Tekki is a protected art and why it’s so expensive.

Perfect gift for writers n collectors!

  • Bunchin, or Paperweight is used to keep loose papers or cloths in place and is made durable to endure hard falls.

When writing with brush and ink, the writer uses a paperweight to fix the paper on the top of the page. This heavy metal bar prevents paper from moving.

Its Japanese aspect makes it perfect as an interior accessory for your home.
