★ Vintage Japanese studio pottery clay figure - MIYAZAKI HANIWA ★
Present female haniwa very likely represents a Shinto maiden, or shaman. They often wear necklaces of round beads with a central magatama bead. Eyes, nose, and mouth of the hollow forms are indicated by perforation, lending the object a mysterious charm.
Haniwa - unglazed terracotta sculptures arranged on and around the mounded tombs (kofun) of the Japanese elite dating from the Tumulus period. They were created according to the wazumi technique, in which mounds of coiled clay were built up to shape the figure, layer by layer.
