KOSHI - koushi - lattice pattern with thick lines to represent power and thin lines to represent elegance. In Edo period, it was common to have room dividers in a lattice pattern. Thin wood or bamboo was set horizontally and vertically to create this pattern.
Purple is a color between silky red and blue dyed with purple root (Lithospermum erythrorhizon). It is one of the seven colors that make up the rainbow and very old color whose name found in the Asuka period.
Since ancient times, purple has been the color of rank at court, and “purple vestments,” which represent the highest rank of priests, could only be worn with imperial authorization. In Edo period, the common people were forbidden to use safflower dyeing purple root dyeing.
